On May 14, 2009 the European Herschel satellite was launched with an Ariane 5 rocket. With a mirror 3.5 meters, it's largest space telescope ever built. The satellite currently provides a wealth of scientific data that has changed our view of the cosmos.
During the lecture the story of Herschel is told. With great attention for its trip through Europe, and the launch in Kourou, French Guiana. Stijn Ilsen will tell about his experiences as a test and system engineer on the project. He gives a unique look behind the scenes with lots of pictures and movies (including internal high-speed camera images of Arianespace). An exciting evening full of interesting facts and anecdotes from someone who has experienced it all live.
The lecture takes place on Thursday December 8 at 20h in room 03.22 of the civil engineering department Arenberg in Heverlee. Everyone is welcome, even non-members of EUROAVIA. As always there is a free reception afterwards.

On October 28, we will visit the AIRBUS plant in Toulouse.
For those that are curious about seeing a A380 in person, this is the perfect opportunity.
AIRBUS offered the following program:
-A visit to the center of aerodynamics of the new airplanes
-Lunch
-Visit to the A380
-And some other activities in the afternoon
Because Toulouse isn't very close to Leuven, we will be making it a 3 day trip.
Places for this event are already occupied which is not to surprising since the A380 is already a real iconic airplane.
